Understanding Your Options for Anxiety, Stress, Sleep and Life Changes
When life feels overwhelming, knowing where to turn for support can feel confusing. Perhaps you’re struggling with anxiety, constant worry, poor sleep, stress, low confidence, or you’re navigating a major life transition such as divorce, bereavement, redundancy or a significant change in circumstances.
There is no single “best” therapy for everyone. The right approach depends on what you’re experiencing, what you want to change and the type of support that feels most comfortable for you.
Some people benefit from having space to talk through their experiences in depth, while others are looking for practical tools to reduce anxiety, improve sleep, manage stress and create positive changes more quickly.
Whatever approach you choose, one of the most important factors in successful therapy is the relationship you build with your therapist. Feeling understood, supported and comfortable can make a significant difference to your progress.
If you’re unsure which approach is right for you, it is perfectly reasonable to ask questions before committing to sessions.

To help explain some of the different approaches that may help you with reducing anxiety, improving sleep and managing stress, I have provided a short outline of some of the main therapies people often ask me about.
Counselling
Counselling is a talking therapy that provides a safe, confidential and non-judgemental space to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences.
A counsellor helps you gain insight into your emotions and behaviours without telling you what to think or do. Counselling can be helpful if you are processing difficult life events, relationship challenges, grief or emotional difficulties and would benefit from having time and space to explore how you feel.
Many people find counselling valuable when they want to understand themselves better and make sense of their experiences.
Psychotherapy
Psychotherapy is often a longer-term therapeutic approach that explores deeper emotional patterns, beliefs and experiences, including those that may have developed earlier in life.
The aim is to increase self-awareness and support personal growth by understanding how past experiences may influence current thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
Psychotherapy may suit people who wish to explore longstanding emotional difficulties in depth over an extended period.
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is a structured, evidence-based approach that focuses on the connection between thoughts, feelings, physical responses and behaviours.
CBT helps people identify unhelpful thinking patterns and develop practical strategies to respond differently. It often includes exercises to practise between sessions, helping reinforce new ways of thinking and behaving.
Although I am not a Cognitive Behaviour Therapist, I draw upon evidence-based CBT principles where appropriate alongside clinical hypnotherapy, neuroscience and behavioural approaches to support clients in creating positive change.
CBT-informed approaches may be helpful if you:
Want practical tools to manage anxiety and stress.
Prefer a structured approach with clear strategies.
Would like to understand how thoughts influence emotions and behaviours.
For example, someone experiencing anxiety may learn techniques to recognise anxious thought patterns, calm their nervous system and develop more helpful responses.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) and BLAST Therapy
Some experiences can leave a lasting emotional impact, particularly traumatic events, distressing memories or significant life changes.
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based psychological therapy primarily used to support people experiencing trauma and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). It uses bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements, while focusing on distressing memories. The aim is to help the brain process these experiences so they become less emotionally overwhelming.
Many people value EMDR because it focuses on how distressing memories are stored and processed in the brain, rather than relying only on talking through difficult experiences in detail.
Building on the principles of EMDR, BLAST Therapy (Bi-Lateral Analysis and Stimulation Treatment) was developed by psychotherapist and hypnotherapist, Nick Davies, who specialises in trauma-informed approaches. BLAST combines bilateral stimulation with elements of neuroscience, ego state therapy and neurolinguistic approaches to work with the brain’s natural processing systems. The approach draws upon developments from experts including Joseph LeDoux, Peter Naish and John Grinder.
The aim of BLAST Therapy is to help the mind reprocess difficult experiences so they can be remembered without triggering the same emotional intensity or physical response.
A key benefit for many clients is that they do not need to repeatedly describe or relive distressing events. Instead, the process is structured, focused and designed to help reduce the emotional impact of difficult memories in a way that feels contained and manageable.
Clinical Hypnotherapy
Clinical hypnotherapy is my main therapeutic approach and combines guided relaxation with focused attention to help you access a calm, receptive state of mind.
Despite common misconceptions, hypnosis is not about losing control. You remain aware, involved and able to make choices throughout the process.
This relaxed state can help the brain become more open to change, supporting the creation of new neural pathways and helping to reduce automatic patterns of thinking, feeling and responding.
Clinical hypnotherapy can be particularly helpful for:
Anxiety and excessive worry
Stress and overwhelm
Sleep difficulties and insomnia
Confidence and self-esteem
Phobias and fears
Habits and unwanted behaviours
Emotional eating and weight management
Performance anxiety
Building emotional resilience
Managing the emotional impact of life changes such as divorce or bereavement
As a trained sleep consultant, I have a particular interest in helping people improve their sleep and understand the relationship between stress, anxiety and the nervous system.
Many clients describe feeling calmer, more positive and better able to cope after sessions, with changes often developing over a relatively small number of appointments.
